The following steps might help you in your search to get an internship or on-campus job:

*Please understand that you CANNOT get a social security number until you receive your first paycheck. If someone asks for one you should tell them that you are on a visa and cannot request one until you have a job. The closest Social Security Administration office can be found here https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/ic001.do#officeResults.

Participate in Academic Training (AT)/Internship:

  1. by searching SIU's career services site, IIE's internship site, and contact your academic department since many have internship coordinators
  2. apply for the internship
  3. if you get the internship, request approval to participate in the internship/academic training from IIE
  4. when you get approval accept the position and start making plans to begin the internship/AT
    1. if the internship/AT is unpaid you are not required to request a social security number (SSN)
    2. if the internship is paid you must request a SSN
      • you will need to apply for a SSN with your first pay stub and letter of approval to begin work from IIE
      • full instructions for how to apply for a SSN can be found in your student handbook

Work an on-campus job:

  1. if you have a 3.0 or higher GPA and this is your second ACADEMIC semester at SIU
  2. search SIU's on-campus job site
  3. if the JOB TYPE: says either "Federal or Non-Federal Work Study" OR simply "Non-Federal Work Study" then you should be able to apply (not eligible to apply for postings that say "Federal Work Study" only)
  4. go to CIE in the Northwest Annex B, and request a work referral at the front desk, bring the following with you:
    1. DS-2019
    2. I-94 card
    3. passport
    4. our office will verify that you have a 2.0 GPA and are in your second academic semester
  5. be sure to follow the instructions online when applying for the job (you may be asked for the work referral at this time, or you may be asked when you get the job)
  6. if you are offered the job, request authorization to work from IIE (at the bottom of the page under "immigration")
    • please remember that you will only be allowed to request approval from IIE once each semester
  7. if they approve your request, accept the job and begin work
  8. you can apply for a temporary social security number when you receive your first pay stub and follow the instructions in your BSMP student handbook for applying
