Interim Director

Dr. Andrew Carver

Dr. Andrew Carver is Interim Director of the Center for International Education and Professor of Conservation and Sustainable Development at Southern Illinois University. He received his M.Sc. from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University and his Ph.D. from the Department of Agronomy, Purdue University where he served as a land use planning extension specialist.  At SIU, Dr. Carver teaches field courses in tropical ecology and conservation and focuses his research on the interconnections between ecosystem health and sustainable community development. Current research projects include development of domestic and international land and water allocation models, building public-private partnerships for resource sustainability, and studying biodiversity in the urban-rural interface.  His work has been presented in over 20 countries and he has served as invited speaker for various agencies including USAID Regional Environmental Program for Central America, U.S.D.A Foreign Agriculture Service and the Republic of Panama Inter-Oceanic Regional Authority.  He has also served as visiting scientist with the U.S. Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry’s International Cooperation Unit in Puerto Rico.  Since 2001, Dr. Carver has worked extensively in the Republic of Panama where he currently serves on the Board of Directors of the PanAmerican Conservation Association.

International Students and Scholars:

Office Manager

Vicki Mac Vicki Macaluso has worked for Southern Illinois University for 16 years – 15 of those with the Center for International Education. Her position here at CIE is Office Manager and she does a little bit of everything but mostly she does the updating of international student records. She was married for 42 years, has five children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren as well as one cocker spaniel named Sammy. She enjoys working and playing on the computer and needlework.

Community and Educational Programs Coordinator

Elaine Conrad Elaine Conrad received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication, and Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Currently, she is a Ph.D candidate in Communication Studies at SIU. Elaine oversees over a dozen different programs for international students and scholars and the community, plans special events and educational exchanges, and administers scholarships and the Inga Sollberger Grant. Elaine is married and has three grown children, five grandchildren, two dogs (Humphrey and Penelope), and a cat (Mildred).

 

Immigration Specialist, RO/DSO

Tina Sickinger Tina Sickinger graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education. She has served the Center for International Education since August of 2013 in many capacities. Currently, she serves as an international student and scholar advisor. Tina holds the title of Responsible Officer (RO) of the J-1 Visa Program and Designated School Official (DSO) of the F-1 Visa Program at SIU. Tina is native to the St. Louis area. She currently lives in Herrin, Illinois with her family and two dogs.

Admission Officer

Mike Michael Deponai graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2006 with a degree in Cinema.  Mike worked in the Graduate School before coming over to the Center for International Education.  He enjoys playing guitar, videography, and he loves the outdoors.  Mike handles the international admissions here at the CIE and is always happy to help.

Jean Stift Jean Stift received her B.A. in Art from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. She has worked at SIU for six years; three at the Center for International Education. She lives in Marion, is married and has one daughter. She enjoys hiking and traveling.

Cheryl BarnettCheryl Barnett graduated from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale in 2004 with a B.A. in Zoology. She is responsible for overseeing and managing international recruitment. Her parents are both also SIU alums, class of 1971. Cheryl currently lives in Carterville with her family, two cats, and a dog. Cheryl is also an officer in the Illinois Army National Guard.

Yi Lee

Yi Lee received his B.A. in History at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and a J.D. at Southern Illinois University. Yi is committed to serving international students. He enjoys maintaining and forging new bonds with overseas university. Nothing motivates Yi more than seeing international students embrace SIU and graduate with rewarding careers. He currently resides in Carbondale with his wife, Rachel. He enjoys travelling, hunting, and WWII reenacting.
