Internationalization Strategic Planning

Main Content

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is one of ten institutions invited to join the American Council on Education (ACE) 2020-2022 Internationalization Laboratory cohort. The Internationalization Laboratory provides leadership for systematic and collaborative campus-wide internationalization planning.  A steering committee appointed by Chancellor Lane will work alongside faculty working groups to deepen SIU’s efforts in the following subject areas: a) international student recruitment, b) global learning in the curriculum, c) study abroad and student/faculty mobility, d) international partnership development, and e) visiting student and scholar programs. Ultimately, the work of the Lab will underpin and enhance SIU’s strategic goals through comprehensive internationalization.

What is comprehensive internationalization?  ACE defines comprehensive internationalization as a strategic, coordinated framework that integrates policies, programs, initiatives, and individuals to make colleges and universities more globally oriented and internationally connected. In order to foster sustainable and just global engagement, the comprehensive internationalization model embraces an organizational growth mindset. It frames internationalization not as an ancillary enterprise, but a means to advance an institution's distinct teaching-research-service mission.
